Three years ago, I had the privilege of attending Uncle George Kahumoku’s Slack Key work shop. There I got to study with masters of Slack Key and reconnect with my Hawaiian roots. Since then, I have put these soothing sounds to use to lull my son to sleep. Most of this album was improvised and later turned into the songs you are now hearing. In fact, I played them so many times for my son that I let him name most of them.
The song, “E Maliu Mai”, is an arrangement of my great Aunty Irmgard Aluli’s song. I grew up listening to her music only to find out later that she was a Hawaiian legend. Her songs and melodies are so wonderful. “E Maliu Mai” is a love song that she wrote for her husband on their wedding day. Please listen to the original and enjoy the sweet message of love.
Personally I am grateful for the love of my beautiful wife, who encouraged me to do this project and my kids for their inspiration. Thanks to Don Gunn for his producing and mixing and Levi Seitz for mastering. Mahalo!
